New Orleans Cuisine: Gumbo

Come and learn about the unique cuisine of New Orleans, The Big Easy — a mixing pot of culture, flavor and history. In this class you’ll learn how to prepare an authentic gumbo served with rice. The instructor will teach you about the holy trinity, how to make a roux from start to finish, and the different types of gumbo. After the pot is made, everyone will enjoy a bowl of fresh gumbo for lunch, or you can take yours to go to enjoy later! This class is demo style. From this class, you’ll leave with a recipe for chicken sausage gumbo with rice, and a delicious Creole seasoning recipe. Please note: Masks are optional. About the teacher: Nate Figaro is the owner of 8020 Creole BBQ & Rubs located in Chattanooga. Nate started his business after experimenting with different spices and herbs to create a Creole rub that reflects the flavors found in Creole cuisine. Born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, he grew up around food and family. His mother was known for her gumbo and family members always asked if she would make gumbo during the holiday season, and her father is known for his skills on smoking meat and Creole cuisine. Nate loves educating others about BBQ and Creole cuisine through his food and recipes. His Creole BBQ rub can be found at SPEK Meats at Cambridge Square in Ooltewah and at Chattanooga Seafood Company in Red Bank.
