Internationally acclaimed as a concert soloist and recording artist, organist Jonathan Dimmock is especially renowned for his interpretations of the music of Bach and Messiaen.  He is currently based in San Francisco where he is the Principal Organist at the Legion of Honor Museum, Organist for the San Francisco Symphony, and Music Director at Congregation Sherith Israel.  In addition, he has served as organist at three US cathedrals: St. John the Divine (New York), St. Mark’s (Minneapolis), and Grace (San Francisco).  In steady demand as an organ recitalist, he is one of the few organists in the world to tour on all six inhabited continents.  From St. Peter’s in Rome to Notre Dame in Paris, and from Carnegie Hall to the Cultural Center in Hong Kong, Jonathan creates programs unique to each venue, always following a relevant theme to help engage his listeners.

Paul Thomas, Director of Music at St. Paul’s, notes, “We are delighted to bring organist Jonathan Dimmock, an extraordinary musical artist, to our sanctuary to perform 20th century French composer Olivier Messiaen’s La Nativité du Seigneur (The Nativity of the Lord) on the eve of the feast of the Epiphany.  Comprised of nine movements, this unique work unfolds as a series of musical meditations on the themes and characters of the Christmas story, evoking beauty, radiance, exhilaration and majesty.  Messiaen himself noted that in addition to the Biblical references, this work was inspired by the natural beauty of his surroundings and the stained glass windows of medieval cathedrals.  Hearing this glorious music on our own Casavant organ will enthrall our audiences and bring them closer to the mystery of the season.”
