Organized in 1953, AIA Chattanooga is the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, a national professional organization with more than 95,000 members. AIA Chattanooga advocates at the national, state, and local levels for issues affecting architects. The organization works to educate the public on the role architects play in their communities, and it also provides continuing education to meet professional requirements for all members (18 hours per year on a wide variety of technical topics). Other resources available to members through the national organization include Conference on Architecture, purchase of contract documents, career center, and AIAU courses. AIA Chattanooga also initiates and participates in outreach work aimed at K-12 education to promote and increase diversity in the professional pipeline by encouraging students to become interested in architecture.
