Labor Day in Chattanooga is quickly approaching, so it’s time to start planning how you’re going to celebrate. Origin of Labor Day
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day originated in the late nineteenth century. Labor activists wanted a federal holiday to be recognized to celebrate the contributions workers make towards America’s strength and prosperity.
Though many celebrated Labor Day before its official recognition, it had been adopted by 23 different states by 1894. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland officially recognized it as a national holiday.

Sundaze: Labor Day Pool Party
September 1
Join Hotel Chalet and Elsie’s Daughter as they host a Labor Day Pool Party in the hotel’s Caboose Courtyard. From 4 to 8 p.m., this end-of-summer celebration will feature music from DJ Maggie Vanderbilt, an American cookout from Chef Zak Towe, and specialty frozen beverages.
McLemore Family Golf Tournament
September 1
Start your Labor Day weekend off right with a family golf tournament at the McLemore Resort from 2 to 9 p.m. Team up as a parent and child duo and play a game of nine holes. Afterwards, join all teams to celebrate with a cookout and enjoy a clinic with professional golfer, Charlie Rymer.
Fall Food Truck Rally
September 1
For our fall enthusiasts, Labor Day marks the start of the autumn season. Head to the Chattanooga Market this Labor Day weekend from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate the holiday with local food trucks, live music, and, of course, your favorite vendors.
Labor Day Pool Party
September 1
Swim the day away at Common House as they celebrate the end of summer with a sun-soaked pool party. From 1 to 4 p.m., DJ Shoey will play throwbacks, sing-a-longs, and R&B as guests relax by the pool. Members and non-members can purchase passes to this pool party.
Labor Day Brunch
September 2
Head to Whitebird, conveniently located within The Edwin Hotel, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a special Labor Day Brunch. Diners can choose from a variety of brunch favorites, refreshing beverages, and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. Tables will fill up quickly, so head to their website to make a reservation.
Labor Day at the Post
September 2
Head just over the Tennessee-Georgia border to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, to celebrate the holiday weekend at Labor Day at the Post. This family-friendly event will feature live music from a variety of artists, food trucks, local vendors, and a classic car show. This event will be held at Barnhardt Circle from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and admission is free.

None of these events calling your name? You don’t have to head to a celebration to have fun this holiday. Instead, check out some of the many activities in the Scenic City this Labor Day weekend.
Tennessee Aquarium
One of the most popular attractions in the Scenic City is the iconic Tennessee Aquarium. With two buildings, a river and an ocean aquarium, this is a perfect adventure for the whole family. Guests can expect to spend two to two and a half hours at the aquarium, though you’re welcome to stay as long as you like. A limited amount of tickets are sold per entry window, so head to their website to plan your trip in advance.
Rock City
Just six miles from downtown lies the incredible Rock City Gardens. With a 4,100-foot-long trail that showcases unique rock formations, a 140-foot waterfall, and stunning mountaintop views, this is an excellent way to spend your Labor Day weekend. If you’re feeling peckish, don’t forget to stop by Café 7 for a meal with a view or by Rock City’s Fudge Kitchen for fudge and other sweet treats!
Ruby Falls
If you’re looking to beat the heat this Labor Day weekend, a foolproof method is to head underground. At Ruby Falls on Lookout Mountain, the entire family can take a cave walk to this underground, 145-foot waterfall. Guests should expect to spend two to three hours at Ruby Falls, though the tours themselves usually last for around 90 minutes. Creative Discovery Museum
For families with younger children, Creative Discovery Museum is a must-see this Labor Day. With engaging exhibits, like the STEM Zone, ArtSpace, and UnEarthed, a treehouse-themed playground on the roof, a huge water play area, and more, your kids will be entertained all day long. Tickets are valid for the entire day, even upon exit and reentry, so let your kids play, take a break to try out a local restaurant, and head back for more creative fun!
Southern Belle Riverboat
If you’re looking to hit the water this Labor Day, check out a ride on the Southern Belle Riverboat. With sightseeing cruises during the day and sunset cruises in the evening, this activity is perfect for families and couples alike. You can also select optional add-Southern Belle Riverboatons to upgrade your cruise, like a charcuterie board or a barbecue sandwich plate. Adult tickets start at $34.99, and children tickets are only $24.99.
Chattanooga Zoo
If you need to get your cute animal fix in, look no further than the Chattanooga Zoo. Here, you can check out giraffes, giant anteaters, chimpanzees, snow leopards, and so much more. While you’re at the zoo, check out their optional zoo encounters. Guests can feed giraffes, take a private tour, and have a meet-and-greet with certain animals.
