Innovation-Anchored Offerings

Chattanooga is home to an award-wining lineup of energy and communications providers. This developed network of electric, gas, internet, telephone, television, and water services work in tandem to provide residents with the resources they need. Leading the pack in innovation and stewardship are Electric Power Board (EPB), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and Tennessee American Water.

Chattanooga residents have access to record-breaking internet speeds, thanks to EPB. Fifteen years ago, the municipality-owned internet provider launched the first ever citywide 1-gigabit fiber optic network, putting Chattanooga on the map as “Gig City.” EPB continued to break new ground in 2022 by increasing access to 25 gigs and launching the country’s first commercial quantum network. Today, EPB serves nearly half a million customers across its 600-square-mile territory and continues to stay at the forefront of innovation.

In addition to internet, telephone, and television services, EPB is also an acclaimed power provider. The utility has built one of the world’s most advanced and resilient smart grid systems, which has amassed millions in energy savings and reduced power outages by 55% since it launched. The American Public Power Association has named EPB a Smart Energy Provider, and in 2024, recognized EPB’s Power to Protect microgrid with an Energy Innovator Award. EPB has consistently earned top marks for its customer service, ranking No.1 in customer satisfaction among midsize utilities in the South by J.D. Power for eight consecutive years, and was recently recognized among the best residential electric utilities in the nation during J.D. Power’s U.S. Utility Brand Appeal Index Study.

Also providing largescale service to Chattanooga is TVA. Since its creation in 1933, TVA has remained devoted to the three Es: energy, environmental stewardship, and economic development. The utility is the largest public power provider in the nation, providing electricity to over 10 million people across Tennessee and its six surrounding states. Ranked the top utility in economic development for 18 years in a row by Site Selection magazine, TVA partners with local governments and power companies to create more jobs in the industry and is a leader in clean energy in the Southeast. The Chattanooga area is home to corporate offices for TVA, as well as several of its major power sources, including Chickamauga Dam, Raccoon Mountain Pumped-Storage Plant – its largest hydroelectric facility – and Sequoyah Nuclear Plant. TVA’s many roles also include flood control, navigation, and land management for the Tennessee River system.

Joining TVA in setting the standard for stewardship is Tennessee American Water, which has been serving the Chattanooga community since 1887. The largest investor-owned water utility in the state, Tennessee American Water provides water and wastewater services to approximately 420,000 people in Tennessee and North Georgia, supplying 40 million gallons of water to customers every day. Its Chattanooga water treatment plant has been awarded the Directors Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Partnership for Safe Water program for 23 consecutive years,  a testament to the utility’s efforts to meet and exceed industry standards. Dedicated to delivering clean, reliable, and affordable water, the utility performs over 1 million water safety tests each year to ensure customers receive water free of contaminants, and last year, invested over $35 million to upgrade water treatment and pipeline systems. In addition to promoting public health, Tennessee American Water is committed to protecting the environment and stewarding the state’s natural resources.

Rounding out these offerings are gas providers such as AmeriGas, Chattanooga Gas, Ferrellgas, and Holston Gases, nationwide phone carriers, municipal utilities, and more.
