The Internet of Things and Smart Cities

Innovation-Anchored Offerings

Electric, gas, internet, telephone, television, and water providers work in tandem to provide Scenic City residents with the resources they need. Leading the pack when it comes to innovation and stewardship are Electric Power Board (EPB), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and Tennessee American Water.

Chattanooga has the fastest internet speeds in the world, thanks to EPB. The internet provider earned Chattanooga its nickname, Gig City, in 2010 when it made history by offering the first citywide 1-gig fiber optic network internet access. After increasing commercial access to an impressive 25 gigs in 2022, EPB has continued to break new ground using quantum technologies. EPB Quantum Network is the country’s first commercially available, software-configurable quantum network, which can provide even faster speeds and securer networks to commercial customers. In addition to internet, television, and telephone services, EPB also provides power to its 600-square-mile territory. It has been named a Smart Energy Provider by the American Public Power Association, recognized as a top performer in TVA’s EnergyRight program, and ranked No 1. in customer satisfaction among midsize utilities in the South by J.D. Power for seven years in a row. EPB’s Smart Grid system is one of the most resilient and reliable power distribution systems in the United States, amassing millions in energy savings. In 2022, it was recognized by the Green Business Certification Inc. for achieving PEER (Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal) Gold recertification.

Also providing largescale, sustainable service to Chattanooga is TVA, one of the largest power providers in the nation. The federally owned organization provides electricity to over 10 million people across Tennessee and its surrounding states, and centers its efforts on energy, environment, and economic development. TVA is also the third-largest nuclear owner and has been recognized nationally for its nuclear innovation by the Nuclear Energy Institute. The Chattanooga area is home to several of its major power sources, including Chickamauga Dam, Raccoon Mountain Pumped-Storage Plant – its largest hydroelectric facility – and Sequoyah Nuclear Plant. In addition to partnering with local government and power companies, TVA oversees flood control, navigation, and land management for the Tennessee River system.

Founded over a century ago, Tennessee American Water provides water and wastewater services to approximately 380,000 people across Tennessee and North Georgia. The water utility is committed to protecting the environment and stewarding the state’s natural resources. With a focus on exceeding industry standards, Tennessee American Water regularly upgrades infrastructure and tests its water supplies to ensure customers receive clean, reliable, and affordable water free of contaminants.

This trio is joined by gas providers AmeriGas, Chattanooga Gas, Ferrellgas, and Holston Gases; nationwide phone providers AT&T, Spectrum, and Xfinity; along with municipal utilities and locally run companies.
