Labor Day in Chattanooga is quickly approaching, so it’s time to start planning how you’re going to celebrate. Luckily, the city of Chattanooga has plenty of events, celebrations, and other activities to keep you entertained all weekend long. Before we dive right in, let’s look at a brief history of the holiday.
Origin of Labor Day
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day originated in the late nineteenth century. Labor activists wanted a federal holiday to be recognized to celebrate the contributions workers make towards America’s strength and prosperity.
Though many celebrated Labor Day before its official recognition, it had been adopted by 23 different states by 1894. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland officially recognized it as a national holiday.
